New tournament director named for Las Vegas event

The PGA TOUR's 26th annual Las Vegas event has some exciting changes in the works for 2008, the first of a five-year title sponsor commitment from Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Returning as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is Gary Davis, local businessman and Shriner. Davis has been involved with the tournament for over twenty years in various capacities. Assisting Davis is new Tournament Director, Mark Gardner, who returns to Las Vegas to assume the key financial and operational aspects of the event.

Gardner's recent posting was as Assistant Tournament Director for the Travelers Championship, a PGA TOUR event in Hartford, Conn., for the past six years where he served as the Director of Operations and Financial Affairs. Prior to Hartford, Gardner was a graduate student in UNLV's Sport Management Department.

Complimenting the management team is Jan Leone, returning for the second year as Director of Sales and Marketing. Leone came aboard in 2007 after spending 20 years working in various marketing roles at the PGA TOUR in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. She now resides in Las Vegas and is spearheading all sales and marketing efforts for the event.

Mike Zampini, Operations Manager, is also marking his second year with the Las Vegas tournament. Zampini completed his M.A. Degree in Sport Management at Ohio State University in June 2007 and then joined the staff in Las Vegas, where he was integral to the success of the 2007 Frys.com Open. Zampini will oversee Volunteer Coordination and Vendor Relations among other areas for the 2008 event.

The Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open will take place at TPC Summerlin October 13-19, 2008. This year's hospitality experience will again include "The Hill" a 22,000 square-foot area overlooking the 16th, 17th and 18th holes where guests can enjoy a fan-friendly atmosphere resplendent with seating areas, tables and large plasma screen televisions for keeping up with all of the sports action.

All 72 holes of the championship will be played at one course, TPC Summerlin, and will allow us to continue enhancing the experience for our spectators. I am confident that this year's management team will achieve our goal of making the PGA TOUR's Las Vegas stop the premier event of the Fall Series."

The event is expected to draw some of the top names on the PGA TOUR and will offer a $4.1 million purse with the winner taking home $738,000. Last year's champion, George McNeill (who scored his first-ever PGA TOUR victory), will return to defend his title.

Shriners and Shriners Hospitals for Children to Kick Off Year-Long Campaign to Prevent Gasoline Burn Injuries

Feb. 3-9, 2008, is Burn Awareness Week, and Shriners across North America and the Shriners Hospitals for Children, kick-off a year-long campaign focused on preventing gasoline burn injuries. A special Web site has been developed for the campaign, www.burnawarenessweek.org.

According to a study published in the November 2007 issue of the Journal of Burn Care and Rehabilitation, there are an estimated 10,000 pediatric (18 years old and younger) burn injuries annually in the United States. Gasoline burn injuries are among the types of burns seen all too frequently at the four Shriners Hospitals specializing in burns.

Since 2002, Shriners Hospitals for Children has treated more than 800 children for acute burns caused by ignition of a highly flammable material, such as gasoline. Shriners Hospitals has treated 229 children from infancy to age 7 and 584 patients in the “tweens” and teens categories, ages 8-18.

Kids 13 and older are in the highest at-risk group for gasoline and other flammable substance burns. Video documentation of gas being misused and played with by adolescents is prevalent on the Internet.
Firefighters, teachers, parents, caregivers and other members of the community are encouraged to participate in the year-long campaign by Calling the Local Shrine Public Relations office or visiting www.burnawarenessweek.org.

The Web site features important gasoline safety and burn prevention messages and tips. If the Local Shrine PR Office dosn't have what you want in stock, the web site offers the opportunity to order free materials, including lesson plans for students in grades K-3, facts sheets about gasoline safety, coloring books, crayons, stickers, pens, temporary tattoos and copies of a DVD developed for teen audiences.

The DVD features the story and compelling message of a teenage Shriners Hospital patient from Cashmere, Wash., Austin Bailiff. Austin sustained gasoline burn injuries on 90 percent of his body after he and his friend played with gasoline. Parents, teachers and firefighters are encouraged to show this video when discussing gasoline safety with teen audiences.

BECKMAN VISITS SHRINERS HOSPITAL

Written by Bill Walters
Thursday, 20 December 2007
Jack Beckman, driver of the Mail Terminal Services Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car
for Don Schumacher Racing in the 2007 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series,
made a special appearance at the Los Angeles Shriners Hospital for Children
on Friday, Dec. 21, 2007,on behalf of the Racers Who Care program.

Beckman, of North Hills, Calif., finished fifth in the 2007 NHRA Funny Car
standings with back-to-back national-event victories during the season.
He has also won four championships and over 50 events at the NHRA Sportsman level
during his drag-racing career. But his racing accomplishments are overshadowed
by the fact that he is a survivor of lymphoma, a form of cancer which he
successfully battled and overcame in 2004 after enduring six months of
chemotherapy.
The 41-year-old father and husband visited the top-notch Shriners
Hospital in Los Angeles in an effort to provide companionship, inspiration and a
distraction to the children who are in the same situation he was in not long ago.
Beckman has visited similar facilities in the past in an effort to show his love and
caring to those who are facing the same situation and challenges that he has
experienced.
"There are some people out there with some serious health issues," said
Beckman, "and there are people out there, for whatever reason, who tend to
suffer more than the average person. I don't think that I'm necessarily a better
human being since the cancer. I just think it's opened my eyes up and I'm a lot
more enlightened than I was before.
"I realize that I'm never going to be Mother Teresa," Beckman explained, "but
there were a lot of people who were very beneficial and inspirational to me when
I was going through the cancer and to be able to be in that position for
somebody else can be very humbling."
Ironically, it was a drag-racing fan whose family member had cancer who alerted
Beckman to the situation and he went to visit them. That visit increased his
awareness of the issue and helped him realize he could become an ambassador
to the sport by starting a tour and making visits to help the morale of patients,
telling them that their illness is not necessarily the end of the world.
Soon after, the Racers Who Care program contacted him about visiting other
facilities and it has become a major part of Beckman's schedule in between
racing.
"It's not a huge effort on my behalf but it might be a huge impact on somebody
else's life," Beckman said.
The L.A. area presentations are part of a community outreach of Racers
Who Care's National Child's Day Celebration planned for next summer in Santa
Monica. More information is available at www.nationalchildsday.com

Burn Awareness 2008 Feb.3-9

Burn prevention is a key endeavor of Shriners Hospitals for Children, which is why the hospital system began its Burn Awareness campaigns more than 25 years ago. Held the first full week in February, Burn Awareness Week is recognized by the National Health and Information Center, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Burn Awareness 2008: Preventing Gasoline Burns

The Shriners Hospitals for Children specializing in burns have treated more than 800 children since 2002 for acute burn injuries resulting from ignition of highly flammable materials such as gasoline. Kids ages 13 and older are in the highest at risk group for gasoline and other flammable substances.

During Burn Awareness Week 2008, February 3-9, Shriners Hospitals is concentrating on preventing gasoline burn injuries and promoting the safe use and storage of gasoline.

Most gasoline injuries are avoidable through proper use and storage of gasoline. We hope that you'll join us in our mission to prevent burn injuries.

Where Are They Now: Daryle Lamonica
Lamonica helped the Bills to back-to-back AFL titles buffalobills.com

By Jim Gehman, Fresno Bee

Daryle Lamonica helped the Bills to a 12-2 record and the first of back-to-back AFL titles in 1964.

Persistence certainly paid off for the Bills in 1963. Even though Daryle Lamonica was drafted by the NFL’s Green Bay Packers in the 12th round, the Notre Dame quarterback chose to go with Buffalo, who were then playing in the AFL and had selected him in the 24th round.

"(Green Bay’s) scout had contacted me right after the draft and said he’d be back in a few days. Two or three weeks went by and no one contacted me. The Bills were contacting me daily and wanted to sign me. I had the East-West Shrine Game coming up and they convinced me to sign a contract before I went and played that game so in case I got hurt, I’d still have a contract," said Lamonica. "I can remember negotiating with Johnny Mazur, the receivers coach with the Bills. They offered me a $1,500 signing bonus and an $11,500 contract. You’ve got to understand, I was from Fresno, California and my mom was sending me five dollars a week out of her beauty shop tips. That was my date money and my spare money and I got along pretty good.

"I went to (Notre Dame head coach) Joe Kuharich and he said, ‘That’s a pretty good contract and you ought to sign it.’ I remember walking back to my dorm and I thought, ‘God, I’m worth more money than that!’ So I called Johnny Mazur back and I said, ‘Coach, I’m ready to sign but I’ve got to have more money.’ He said, ‘Well, what do you need?’ I said, ‘I need a $2,000 bonus and a $12,000 contract.’ There was a long pause at the other end of the phone. He said (later that) he was laughing so hard he almost dropped the phone. He said, ‘The contract’s in the mail.’"

Lamonica continued. "So I sent it back and went to the East-West game and was able to win the MVP. I had scouts coming up after the game saying, ‘We’ll give you a $100,000 bonus and a $100,000 contract to sign.’ I’m going, ‘What!?’ I didn’t realize there was that much money in the whole world! But hell, with that (extra) $500 I was able to end up buying a new Chevrolet Impala convertible."

With the car’s top down, Lamonica put the pedal to the metal and in a sense, floored Lou Saban. Impressed during training camp, the head coach put him on the team as Jack Kemp’s backup. Lamonica also handled the punting duties with 52 kicks and a 40.1 average. The following season, Kemp passed for 2,285 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Lamonica totaled 1.137 passing yards and six scores. They helped lead the Bills to a 12-2 record and the first of back-to-back AFL titles.

"Our chemistry was just perfect. We prided ourselves for being really in good shape so we could finish the fourth quarter. It didn’t matter what the situation was or what the weather was, we were a physical lot. We worked hard and the camaraderie we had as a team, it just jelled. We didn’t care whether the offense won it, the defense won it, or special teams won it. We always seemed to pull it out. We just felt that we could win and nobody could beat us," Lamonica said.

"I think what made us special is that the offensive line contributed to the game plan, the wide receivers contributed, all the backs, everybody had a little input into what we wanted to do and how we wanted to do it. That made it really easy because we were able to talk on the sideline and ask what was going on with the offensive line. And the receivers (would say) they thought they could do certain things. Then we’d dictate by offensive formation and get the situation that we wanted."

As it would turn out, that season was when Lamonica believes Oakland Raiders boss Al Davis initially decided that he wanted the young quarterback to wear the Silver and Black.

In 1967, Lamonica was traded to Oakland for quarterback Tom Flores and wide receiver Art Powell.

"I called a post pattern to Elbert Dubenion and dropped back to throw and Ben Davidson, their right defensive end, had come clean. I threw a long pass to Dubenion and he caught in full stride for a touchdown. Davidson really unloaded on me. I was told later that when Al Davis saw me take the hit and get up on one knee to see if the pass was completed, he wanted to get me as a quarterback."

In 1967, Davis got his wish. Oakland traded quarterback Tom Flores and wide receiver Art Powell for Lamonica and wide receiver Glenn Bass.

"I was shocked! The night before, I had talked to Ralph Wilson Jr. and Sr., and they both told me they were looking forward to me being their starting quarterback and coming back. Hell, I was all jazzed up. I could have run through brick walls. Eight hours later, I was traded," said Lamonica. " It’s how I found out about the trade I guess that was the biggest shock to me.

"I was in my hometown (Clovis, Calif.), and some buddies came up and said, ‘Hey, you’ve been traded to the Raiders.’ I said, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ok.’ I had to call the Fresno Bee, my hometown paper to find out. Well, I was devastated from having talked to the Bills organization the night before. I thought I would play more ball there, but as I found out, it’s a business. As it worked out for me, it was the best thing that could have happened for me. It gave me an opportunity to come back to the West Coast, where I was born and raised."

Lamonica and his wife, Mary, still reside on the West Coast, in Central California. They have two adult sons: Brian, who has a construction trucking company in Rochester, Minn. He is married and has three children; and Brandon, who recently graduated from Fresno State and is now involved in commercial real estate.

"The Mad Bomber" stays busy these days in commercial real estate and with some public speaking engagements. He’s also stayed loyal to his passion of hunting and fishing.

"That’s the way I stay in shape. Three years ago, I had a total artificial titanium (left) knee put in. That’s working out just great. I’m going up and down canyons that I haven’t been in in 30 years. I play 18 holes of golf with no pain. So I feel very fortunate that I’ve got good health and my family is all in good health."

Treadmills Burn

Treadmills can burn more than calories

Trying to reach that New Year's resolution with a new treadmill? Before jumping on, make sure young children are in a safe spot.

Doctors at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Cincinnati have seen a steady increase in hand burns caused by exercise treadmills over the last six years.

Theresa Mayes, RD, a mother of three young children and a Finneytown resident, became concerned with the increase in these injuries. So a few years ago, she went beyond her work as a clinical dietitian at Shriners Hospital and developed a poster about treadmill safety. "The contact burn from a treadmill is often a third-degree burn and it can take the skin right off, requiring a skin graft," said Mayes.

Of the many cases seen at the Cincinnati burn hospital, most of them heal quickly with minimal scarring, but the pain with the initial injury and ongoing rehabilitation can be very scary.

Treadmill use and safety tips:

* Never let a child play on or near a treadmill.

* Always unplug the treadmill or other exercise equipment when not in use.

* Provide continuous supervision and keep children away from the treadmill when in use; use a playpen.

* Consider using the treadmill when young children are not in your "direct" care (napping, preschool or under the care of another responsible person in the home).

* For older children, set firm limits that they are not to "play" on the treadmill.

* Seek proper medical attention if a child is injured on a moving treadmill.

* Copies of the poster are available from Shriners Hospitals by e-mailing dheckler@shrinenet.org.
