On Friday December 19th, 2014, an all-star cast of Portland blues, jazz and soul musicians will light up the stage at the first annual "Stumptown Soul Spectacular," a benefit and toy drive for the patients of Shriners Hospitals for Children - Portland. The concert will take place at Dante's historic club; 350 W Burnside St in Portland (SW 3rd and Burnside), and begins at 8:00p.m. (Doors open at 7:00p.m. for seating and drinks).
The featured performers of the evening include some of the Northwest's most prolific blues, jazz and soul singers.
Ural Thomas, a legendary Northwest soul singer who has most notably formed "Ural Thomas and the Pain," was recently crowned Best New Band in the annual Willamette Week poll in 2014. Ural sprung onto the Seattle music scene in the 1950's and 60's, but the 73 year old icon continues to bring the house down at every show.
Karen Lovely, a Portland blues staple, was nominated in 2011 for several Blues Music Awards for best contemporary blues female artist, best contemporary blues album, and best blues song. She is a 7 time Muddy Blues Award winner, and has also been featured in numerous Portland Waterfront Blues festival performances. Karen is known for her passionate, driven performances and is a powerhouse on the stage.
Steve Kerin, the Louisiana born "piano man," is a musical tour de force. Not only has Steve been featured in a plethora of Northwest music projects; including Curtis Selgado and Miriams Well, he also created the successful Atomic Gumbo and Berthaline & the Love Brigade Cajun bands. Steve is a one man band with a big heart and New Orleans pizazz.

Reggie Houston, a legendary New Orleans saxophonist and singer, has been a musical fixture for decades. Reggie has performed with everyone from The Fats Domino Band, to Peter Gabriel, to the
amazing Dr. John. A funk and jazz pioneer, Reggie continues to blow fans away with his progressive style.

Other featured artists include; singer Dan Berkery of the famed Rose City Kings, singer Jennifer Smieja of Too Loose Cajun Band and the Jennifer Smieja Band, singer Kris Deelane of KD and the Hurt, guitarist Peter Dammann of Border Crossing, Berklee music guitarist Mark Bowden of Miriams Well, singer Katy O'Berg of Rose City Kings and The Georgies (Level 2), and singer Aundria Lauren of The Georgies (Level 2). Also featuring backing band "The Georgies "- Ron Cockerham (sax), Jim Wolf (drums), Tim Shaunessy (bass).

The performance proceeds will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children Portland, whose 90 plus year mission is to provide care to children with orthopedic issues, regardless of the patient's ability to pay. The Portland hospital has been instrumental in helping children defy the odds of disability, as well as pioneering education and research to improve lives for generations.

Mike Singletary and Jim Zorn Named as Coaches for 90th East-West Shrine Game

Role model NFL players will direct respective teams in support of Shriners’ Children’s Hospitals

Two NFL greats—each particularly legendary in the annals of specific teams—have been selected as head coaches for the 90th East-West Shrine game. NFL Hall-of Famer Mike Singletary, who starred as a linebacker for the Chicago Bears during the 1980s, will lead the East squad of college all-stars. Jim Zorn, the playmaking quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks during the team’s fledgling years in the late 70s will guide the West team. The game is set for January 17, 2015 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.

In addition to their stellar playing careers, the two men also have extensive coaching backgrounds—including serving as head coaches of NFL teams—Singletary with the San Francisco 49ers in 2009 – 2010, Zorn with the Washington Redskins (2008 – 2009).

Held annually since 1925, the East-West Shrine game has featured some of the most talented athletes out of the college ranks. It’s not unusual to see as many as 100 players from game rosters sign with NFL teams.

Noting the contest’s mission to support the Shriners’ Hospital for Children, Singletary said, “I’m very excited to participate in this worthwhile event as a head coach. So many of these young players are on the cusp of some great seasons in the NFL, but I think that playing for a cause like Shriners Hospital will provide worthwhile perspective as they transition to professional careers.”

Zorn agreed. “I coached college athletes for several years and the opportunity to get to know and watch the development of outstanding young men is a tremendous experience. I’m extremely happy to be doing that again within the setting of the East-West Shrine game supporting Shriners’ Hospital for Children.”

Application:

1. Starting with the medium round brush and the white face paint, paint a big “U” shape design. The sides of the U will be much thinner than the bottom.

2.Next add the trim of his hat and the ball that goes on the end.

3. Using the same brush, add red and fill in the shape of the hat. It kind of looks like and upside down “y”.

4.Now using the small round brush and the black paint, outline the design, bringing it to life. Add two circles for the eyes, a crescent moon shape for the nose, and a nice Santa smile over the white part of the beard. Add thick to thin lines as much as you can while outlining the design.

5.Finally, using the small round brush add two white dots to the eyes, and add a few dots and stars to the design. Finish off with glitter for a nice effect.

Lodi Lodge No. 256, Free and Accepted Masons present Hiram Award

On Nov. 1, Park Johnson was presented the Hiram Award in recognition of his service to Lodi Lodge No. 256, Free and Accepted Masons. Johnson joined the lodge in 2008 and has been active in the lodge affairs by serving on numerous committees and participating in projects and activities.

Following the presentation ceremony, a dinner was held in his honor and it was attended by over 50 friends, family and lodge members. The Hiram Award is the highest award that can be bestowed by a Masonic lodge upon one of its members and only one such award can be presented each calendar year. The award is presented in recognition of the member’s outstanding service to the lodge and exemplification of the ideals and tenants of Freemasonry

On Nov. 6, brothers Joseph and Norman Maley were each presented with a Golden Veteran Award to commemorate their 50 years as a member of the Masonic fraternity. The brothers became Master Masons on the same day in November 1964. A dinner was hosted by Lodi Lodge F. & A.M. in their honor prior to the presentation ceremony. The dinner was attended by over 50 family, friends, and lodge members.

The Masonic fraternity is entwined in both of their lives. Their grandfather, Joe Maley, was a member of Woodbridge lodge F. & A.M. Their father, “Bud” Maley, was a member of Lodi Lodge and their mother a member of the Rainbow Girls as was Joe’s sister Betty and Lou’s sister Cindy.

Joe’s father-in-law, Tom Fuller, was the Master of Manteca Lodge, and an uncle, Richard Lang, was a 33 degree Scottish Rite in San Jose.

The brothers, Norman “Lou” Maley and brother Joseph “Joe” Maley were both born in the Lodi area, and are descendents of early settlers. The ancestral home, built by great-great grandfather Andrew Hashner, who came to the Lodi area in the late 1860’s, still stands on Turner Road near DeVries Road. Both brothers attended local schools, and except for time spent at U.C. Davis and their military service (Joe-national guard and Lou-Navy) they have stayed close to Lodi’s farming community raising cattle, tomatoes and grapes. They established what is now the Maley Brothers Winery in the mid-1980’s, one of the earlier wineries in the Lodi area which is now being operated by Todd Maley, Joe’s son.

The Maley brothers have both been active in the local community: Joe helping to found Tokay Savings and Loan, member of the California Association of Wine Grape Growers, California Farm Bureau and Delta Sigma Phi to name a few, and brother Lou has been active in the Turner School District, Woodbridge Vineyard Association, Woodbridge Fire Department, and American Legion, also just to name a few.

Both brothers have large families in the area: Lou–a daughter, three grand children and two (soon to be three) great granddaughters. Joe: a son and a daughter, three grandsons, and two grand daughters. (A last note on Lou Maley: he is said to make great homemade pickles and olives.)
