Shriners help purchase equipment for audiology unit

The Golden Ears Shiners recently donated $2,710 to the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation.

The money will help purchase a Verifit for the audiology department, located at the Maple Ridge Health Unit.

The department screens 97 per cent of all infants born to in the Fraser Health region.

Last year more than 14,600 babies were checked for hearing loss.

The unit specializes in providing all of the hearing screening, diagnostic assessment and equipment support for Maple Ridge children to the age of 19 who are referred. It currently has  more than over 700 clients.

A Verifit, costing $15,200, is used with all of the children who are fit with hearing aids and some children who require assistive listening equipment. The

The Verifit currently in use is outdated, being 10 years old.

In B.C., Shriners provide free transportation and care from all over the province to hospitals to needy children from one to 18 years of age.

They transport children to the Spokane Children’s Hospital, Portland Children’s Hospital B.C. Children’s Hospital, McDonald House and Easter Seal House, without charge.

SIS donates to Shriners’ children’s hospital

SANFORD ­— Sanford Institution for Savings (SIS) recently made a donation of $729.19 to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The money was raised solely by SIS employees during the bank’s monthly “Jeans Day for a Cause” fundraiser.
Once a month, SIS holds a “Jeans Day for a Cause,” during which employees pay to wear jeans on a Friday and Saturday. A different charity is selected for each month, and the staff works together to choose charities that are poignant for them and their families.
Recently, Ryan Goldammer, an SIS employee, requested a jeans day and bake sale to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Born with a spinal birth defect, Goldammer credits Shriners Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts, for giving him the opportunity to walk and lead an enjoyable and productive life. As a member of Shriners, Goldammer actively works to raise both awareness and funds for the hospital.
Goldammer is also involved in “Can Tabs for Kids,” a fundraising endeavor in which he collects aluminum can tabs throughout the year and turns them into a designated redemption center; the proceeds are then sent to Shriners Hospitals in Springfield and Boston, Massachusetts. Several companies, including SIS, are working with him to collect can tabs. He is making his yearly donation, which came to $205. SIS has generously agreed to match this donation.
“The Shriners Hospitals for children provide medical care to children regardless of their parents’ ability to pay,” said Goldammer. “I am one of those children who can walk today because of Shriners Hospitals. I would like to thank all the supporters of the ‘Can Tabs for Kids’ campaign. This money will go to Shriners Hospitals for Children in New England to buy equipment that is needed.”
The jeans day and bake sale were held in July, and the SIS staff and employees raised $729.19, which was donated to Shriners Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Tourney nets $11,000 for Shriner’s Hospitals

Team Shark Byte was the overall winner.

The Oregon Inlet Billfish RoundUp got off to what might seem a slow start with a small field of boats for the inaugural event.

“Every event starts somewhere,” stated director and owner Heather Maxwell.

“Our goals were to provide a professionally run event with outstanding service that would take advantage of Oregon Inlet’s phenominal fishing and our unique southern hospitality,” Maxwell said.

Those goals were met over the three-day event plus some, as the tournament raised over $11,000 for the Shriner’s Childrens Hospitals.

Participants released 46 whites, 2 blues and 4 sailfish vieing for a $42,000 100% payout purse.

The event boasts a high minimum weight and no blue marlin were killed.

That jackpot reverted back to blue marlin release points, while the High Point Jackpot was determined by combined release points and the Top Boat on white marlin points only.

Each evening, guests enjoyed phenomenal dinners and a show by national recording artist Colton James.

“It’s an interesting breakdown and enables the purse to be distributed among more teams”, says Maxwell. No wahoo were caught so that purse was distributed between dolphin and wahoo winners.

Team Shark Byte, a 73’ Bayliss hailing from Rumson, NJ, Pete Cherasia, Nick Rauco, Dickie Campbell, mate Kyle Francis and Capt. Rich Barrett won top boat overall with 16 whites.

The boys also swept the meatfish, took first in the blue marlin category, had two dailies and won the High Point jackpot with 16 whites, 1 blue and 1 sail for 1800 points, and a total prize of $32,200.

Second place went to Stream Weaver, a 60’ Paul Spencer from Wilmington, NC and Capt. Mike King with 15 whites released, and third place went to local 59’ Paul Spencer, Bi Op Sea and Capt. Jesse Granitzki with 10 whites.

The staff and volunteers would like to thank all participants, sponsors and guests, and echo the sentiments of everyone there…The OIBR can get bigger but not much better.

The 2013 event will be held Sept. 11 through 14.

Shriners hold free children's clinic in Lewistown this Saturday

Shriner’s Hospitals for Children will sponsor an annual free clinic in Lewistown Saturday at the Central Montana Community Health Center.

These free clinics are established to help children with a large number of illnesses and birth defects.  They are known to provide expert pediatric care in orthopedics and is provided in a family centered environment regardless of a patient's ability to pay.

 Anyone knowing a child in need of this service can get more information by calling the Lewistown number, 535-4748, or the Billings office at 259-4384.

The free children's clinic in Lewistown is this Saturday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon at the CMCHC located at 406- 1st Avenue South.  

Christmas Card's

For 2012, the Daughters of the Nile Foundation selected artwork by Northern California patient, Albertito Salamon, for their annual Christmas card fundraiser.  Albertito’s artwork graces the cover of the card (see attachment) and he is profiled on the inside top panel.  The cards are packaged 20 to a pack for a price of $18.  The hospital has a limited number of cards available for immediate purchase and orders may be placed with the Development Office.  Checks should be made out to Shriners Hospitals for Children - Northern California and we can accept credit cards as well.  The hospital will mail your order to you directly. 

As many of you know, the Daughters of the Nile is a membership organization comprised of women related by birth or marriage to Shriners or Masons whose philanthropic efforts benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. Fundraisers like these greeting cards have enabled the Daughters of the Nile to contribute more than $50 million over the years to Shriners Hospitals for Children -- $2 million of which was designated to our Sacramento hospital.

Daivd Regan Flying Shriners Hospital colors

A special cause will be featured on the No. 34 Ford of David Ragan at New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend. Ragan will be carrying the colors of Shriners Hospitals for Children® and their tagline, Love to the rescue™. Shriners Hospitals for Children® provides specialty care to children up to age 18 with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families' ability to pay. All care and services are delivered in a family-centered environment.

Ragan's second-best qualifying of 2012 came earlier this season at New Hampshire, in which he started 19th before an engine issue forced the team to finish 33rd. The Georgia native holds six career top-25 finishes in eleven career starts at Loudon, including a career-best effort of 7th in last year's fall race.

At the 2012 Imperial Session in Charlotte, N.C., NASCAR driver David Ragan was inducted into Shriners International fraternity as a member of Oasis Shriners.

In addition to Ragan's racing achievements, he is a loyal supporter of Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children®. Since naming the pediatric health care system his official charity of choice in 2008, he has used his popularity to increase awareness and raise funds for the organization. In addition, Ragan has taken time out of his busy schedule to visit several of the Shriners Hospitals and participate in public service announcements.
